A local journalist Iqbal Kazmi currently under trial for fraud who filed petition in Sindh High Court against May 12, 2007 violence in Karachi holding Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) responsible for killing of more than 50 people, Saturday conditionally agreed to withdraw his petition.
"I will withdraw the petition if the government ensures security of life to my family", he said while talking to newsmen during production before Judicial Magistrate Karachi South Zulfiqar Memon. He said his family was being threatened of dire consequences and was being pressurised to withdraw the petition.
Iqbal Kazmi said that he feared that he would be killed in custody and authorities would call it a suicide. Meanwhile, Judicial Magistrate Karachi South Zulfiqar Memon Saturday extending judicial remand of Iqbal Kazmi sent him to jail till July 11, 2007.
Darakhshan Police arrested Iqbal Kazmi on June 12, 2007 for involvement in dishonouring of his cheques. The police said five cases were registered against him last year, on the charges of fraud, threats & cheque bouncing. Three cases were at Darakhshan police station and one each at PS Al-Falah & PS Gizri. According to police Iqbal Kazmi was earlier declared absconder in three cases.
JM, allowing Investigation Officer Munir Chandio request who prayed for extension of judicial remand of accused, sent Iqbal Kazmi to jail till July 11, 2007. He directed the investigation officer to submit charge-sheet against Kazmi on the next date of hearing.
