Lahore DHA blast was not an act of terrorism: Punjab Law Minister

Published February 24, 2017 Updated February 24, 2017 08:56am

imageLAHORE: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Friday that the blast in Lahore's DHA area a day earlier was not an act of terror but an "accident", as forensic samples collected from the site had shown that the blast was a cylinder explosion.

Addressing a press conference late on Friday morning Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah confirmed no traces of explosives were found from the site of the explosion, adding it was likely the result of a gas leak and not an act of terrorism.

No proofs of explosives detonation have been found in the forensic report, he added.

The minister said so far investigation into the explosion suggested that it occurred in the wake of negligence.

Regarding a question, Sanaullah said snap checking had been beefed up across the city for the security of citizens.

Thursdays blast at an under-construction cafe in the Defence Housing Authority areas Z Block killed its owner Moazzam Paracha, who was also chief executive officer of telecom company Airlink. Sanaullah said the blast had killed seven people and injured 35 others.

Sanaullah lamented that national media instead of verifying facts carried misleading news stating that yesterdays blast was a terror incident which, he said, created panic in the city.

Answering a question, Sanaullah said the decision about whether the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final will be held in Lahore or not will be shared with the public today.

He said Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif was meant to chair a meeting on the PSL final on Thursday but it could not be held due to the DHA incident.
