A bird-esque figurine, dating back almost 7,000 years has archaeologists in Greece stunned as to its origin, what it exactly is and also where it came from.
Dubbed, the 7,000-year-old-enigma by the National Archaeological Museum, is not on display until 26 March after being rummaged out of the museums storage rooms.
It is the latest entry to be presented under the title, The Unseen Museum homage to approximately 200,000 antiquities from statues, sculptures to gold jewellery and regular life objects, which were not on the daily display but in the storage.
Carved out of granite the statuette is 14 inches in height and is of the late Neolithic era with a pointed nose and long neck leading to a circular belly and cylindrical petite legs.
An archaeologist with the Museum, Katya Manteli said, It could depict a human-like figure with a bird-like face, or a bird-like entity which has nothing to do with man but with the ideology and symbolism of the Neolithic society.
Experts are also not sure of its origin as it used to belong to a personal collection. They presume that it is from the northern Greek regions of Thessaly or Macedonia.
Unlike most Neolithic figurines made of soft stone, it is carved out of hard rock even though metal tools were not available at the time.
