KARACHI: Saleem Shahzad, leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) who landed in the metropolis here on Monday has been arrested and taken into custody on his arrival at Karachi airport from Dubai.
According to latest reports, there are multiple cases registered in various police stations in Karachi against Saleem Shahazad. However, upon being taken into custody, Shahzad was not handcuffed but was taken away in an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).
Saleem Shehzads passport has also been confiscated by the FIA. The police officers are holding interrogation from the leader regarding different charges including his escape from the country on fake ID card in 1990s.
Saleem Shahzad who had been living in London since 1992 was wanted by the Karachi police for various cases against him. The most prominent and recent was in connection with allegations made by former Petroleum Minister Dr. Asim Hussain that Shahzad had facilitated the medical treatment of terrorists and arranged shelter for them.
Whereas, a case of passport forgery also stands against Saleem Shahzad.
Saleem Shehzad, who remained in extended self exile, had left politics for quite some time. He had supported chief of MQM Pakistan Farooq Sattar. He decided to return back to the country from Dubai two days ago. He had left the country after the 1992 Operation.
Talking to media at the Airport after his arrival in Karachi Saleem Shehzad said that he would accept the decision of the courts in over 20 cases registered at various police stations of Karachi.
Saleem Shehzad has been declared an absconder in Dr Asim case about providing treatment to terrorists.
