imageWELLINGTON: New Zealand lost their batting anchor Tom Latham for 177 just before lunch as wickets and records tumbled on the fourth day of the first Test against Bangladesh on Sunday.

New Zealand were 402 for six at the break, still 193 runs behind Bangladesh's first innings 595 for eight declared at Wellington's Basin Reserve.

Latham, who batted for just under seven hours and faced 329 deliveries, posted his highest Test score and also the highest score by a New Zealand opener on the ground.

But, on another blustery, overcast Wellington day, he became the third New Zealand wicket to fall on an easy track in the morning session.

Henry Nicholls and Colin de Grandhomme were also dismissed as New Zealand worked their way past the follow-on mark.

New Zealand resumed at 292-3 and added 11 in the first three overs before the new ball was taken.

Nicholls, in search of a good innings to cement his middle-order slot, made 53 in a 142-run stand with Latham -- a New Zealand record fourth wicket stand against Bangladesh -- while de Grandhomme went cheaply for 14.

De Grandhomme charged into the fray with a four and a six in a rush to reach 14 when he was caught behind to give Subashis Roy his first Test wicket.

An on-drive from Latham for two took him past his previous best 137 against Pakistan three years ago and he reached his 150 cutting Kamrul Islam to the boundary.

Kamrul was to be denied Latham's wicket on 158 when Mehedi Hasan, who had taken a smart catch at leg slip to remove Nicholls, failed to grasp a sharp chance at second slip.

Latham, in his 28th Test, moved past 2,000 runs and lifted his average to 39.50 before he was dismissed with 14 balls remaining in the morning session.

He was trapped plumb in front trying to sweep Shakib Al Hasan and did not even bother reviewing the dismissal.
