Researchersat the University of California, Irvine have invented a nanowire-based batterythat would almost never need replacement and would last for an astounding spanof 400 years!

The breakthrough has been consideredof such grand proportions that it may be incorporated into commercial use tohave a greatly lengthened battery lifespan for spacecraft, cars, computers, smart phones and electronics.

According to foreign media, Mya LeThai a PhD student at UCI had accidently discovered the battery while experimentingwith nanowires of gold embedded in an electrolyte gel.

Nanowires being the good conductorsthat they are hold electrons more rigidly due to their surface area; since theyare very fragile they often crack and die after a few charge cycles. A chargecycle is what you call when a battery is completely depleted and then ischarged completely back to its full capacity.

Usually a battery begins to declineafter 5000-6000 cycles, whereas an average laptop battery lasts for 300-500cycles; however, the accidental discovery of this battery-of-the-future cycledupwards of 30,000 cycles that too consistently for a month.

The new battery would extend thelifespan of current batteries by over 400 years.
