President General Pervez Musharraf was accorded warm welcome when he arrived here on Friday from Shanghai to attend the second summit of Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). He was received by Deputy Minister of Defence of Kazakhstan, General Zhanafaev, and other officials.
Two children, clad in traditional dress, presented a bouquet to President Musharraf, while a contingent of Kazakh Armed Forced presented salute. The CICA is an initiative of the President of Kazakhstan, aimed at renewing efforts to create improved security environment in Asia.
The second CICA summit will adopt a declaration which will cover confidence-building measures, counter-terrorism, weapons of mass destruction non-proliferation, the issue of small arms and light weapons, impact of infectious diseases, human rights, education and development of transport and communication links. It will also adopt a Statute for the Establishment of a CICA Secretariat in Almaty. President Musharraf is visiting Kazakhstan on the invitation of President Nursultan Nazarbeav.
The Summit in Almaty will be attended by a number of leaders from the 17 CICA member countries, which include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Palestine, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand and Turkey.
President Musharraf will have bilateral meetings with heads of states and governments of some countries, some of whom also attended the SOD Summit in Shanghai. The President had participated in the First CICA Summit held in Almaty on June 4, 2002.
