Sialkot District Government has passed its tax-free development-oriented budget unanimously for the financial year 2005-06 amounting to more than Rs 3.84 billion.
Presenting the budget in the house, Sialkot district Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema here on Wednesday said that Rs 1.30 billion, which was 35 per cent of the budget, would be spent on the completion of development projects in the district.
Highlighting the salient features of the budget, the District Nazim told the house that more than Rs 1.75 billion had been allocated for education sector and Rs 29.58 crore for health services in the budget.
Akmal Cheema said out of total budget Rs 3.58 crore have been earmarked for agriculture; Rs 11.10 crore for building and means of communication and Rs 11.44 lakh for public health, Rs 17 lakh for industry and Rs 28.41 lakh for labour.
Akmal Cheema said five per cent budget of the basic healthcare units; rural health centres, hospitals and veterinary sector had been increased while Rs 61 lakh allocated for the purchase of new machinery for Allama Iqbal hospital. Apart from this, rupees 50 lakh had been earmarked for the improvement of basic health units and rural health centres aimed at providing maximum treatment facilities to the masses at their doorstep, he said.
Akmal said that Rs 50 lakh would be utilised on the boundary walls construction of girl high schools while Rs 25 lakh would be spent on the repair and construction of girls colleges. The District Nazim said Rs 25 lakh had been allocated for providing wheel chairs, free textbooks, uniforms and hearing aid instruments to the special children and stipend amounting to Rs 200 per month would also be provided to the special kids.
The District Nazim further informed the house that 67 watercourses, including 50 canal area and 17 watercourses, in Barani areas would be completed at a cost of Rs 4.2 crore in the district.
Similarly, 59 schemes of roads would be completed at the cost of Rs 15.41 crore of which 47 roads would be completed under district government programme while 12 schemes would be accomplished with grants, he disclosed. Akmal Cheema added that Rs 1.4 crore would be spent on the completion of six ongoing projects pertaining to women welfare while Rs 50 lakh had been set aside for the new schemes in the district. The district nazim assured the house that development programme would be carried out evenly in the district and with the co-operation of the elected members of Sialkot district would convert it into a model district of the Punjab province.
