The eminent educationist, philanthropist and lady of letters, Begum Amina Majeed Malik, aged 91, passed away on Monday here after a brief illness.
Begum Amina Malik had a life of exceptional achievement, and was a trail blazer for Muslim women in the sub-continent.
At the age of 13, she topped her matriculation exam becoming first Muslim girl in India to do so.
At 15, she repeated the achievement at intermediate level, and at 18, obtained first class first in BA. In 1932, she was married to Majeed Malik, a pioneer of English journalism.
Begum Amina did her Bachelor of Teaching from Aligarh Muslim University and Masters in Philosophy from Bombay University. Her experience of higher experience convinced her that most pressing need was education for children.
She began working on major reputed project of her life - the PECHS Girls School and College in Karachi, which has over the past many decades provided a balanced education to middle class girl students. She was a close associate of celebrated poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
