Taiwan stocks rise; HTC up on iPhone disappointment

taiwanTAIPEI: Taiwan stocks opened up 0.19 percent on Wednesday, with smartphone maker HTC rising 1.34 percent after rival Apple Inc's newest iPhone disappointed Wall Street and fans.

Apple supplier Hon Hai slipped 0.87 percent, while the electronics sub-index was up 0.61 percent.

The main TAIEX index rose 13.3 points to 7,061.17.

Banking shares shed 1.52 percent on concerns over the deepening sovereign debt woes in Europe.

The Taiwan dollar was flat at T$30.679.

Foreign investors were net sellers on Tuesday, offloading T$2.783 billion.
