Canada PM to attend Libya talks in Paris
OTTAWA:Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper plans to attend a meeting in Paris next week on Libya's future without strongman Moamer Qadhafi, his office said Friday.
The leaders of more than 30 countries are expected to convene in the French capital on September 1 to discuss Libya's future after rebels overran Qadhafi's compound in Tripoli on Tuesday.
Canada is one of the leading nations in a NATO-led alliance that has conducted an aerial bombing campaign against the Qadhafi regime since March, when the United Nations approved action to protect civilians.
Ottawa has contributed six F-18 fighter planes and a frigate, and the NATO mission is led by a Canadian general.
Canada has welcomed a new Libyan envoy sent by the rebels' National Transitional Council to Ottawa and pledged to resume normal operations at the Canadian embassy in Tripoli as soon as the security situation has improved.
