NEW YORK: US stocks opened slightly lower on Wednesday after the Moody's ratings agency downgraded Japan's credit rating, causing a slide in Asian markets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 19.07 points (0.17 percent) to 11,157.69 in the first five minutes of trading.
The broader S&P 500 fell 0.36 point (0.03 percent) to 1,161.99, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.49 points (0.10 percent) to 2,443.57.
Moody's cut Japan's credit rating by one notch, citing faltering efforts in Tokyo to reduce the country's mountain of debt.
