LAHORE: Heavy rain hit the Punjab capital and its suburbs on Tuesday submerging almost all areas in rain water while some of the underpasses were also giving look of water ponds.
The rain to some extent gave relief to the citizens from hot and humid weather but on the other hand it created problems for people who suffered a lot as the storm water entered into the houses, underpasses and buildings.
The storm water also drowned all the major roads creating heavy traffic mess on the Mall, Jail Road, Empress Road, Main Boulevard Gulberg, Ferozepur Road near Gaddafi Stadium, Muslim Town Underpass, Multan Road and almost all roads leading to the Railway Station. The traffic remained jam for hours at Canal road from Campus to Muslim Town, near Garden Town, Gulberg, Ichhra, Garhi Shahu and other areas.
The heavy rain also caused problems for the citizens as rainwater accumulated in the low-lying areas suspending routine life for hours.
Most streets and roads in the city were inundated with rainwater, exposing the planning of the departments concerned of the city administration.
DCO Lahore Ahad Cheema and MD WASA Javed Iqbal also visited various areas to inspect the rain water disposal. They directed the officials to ensure the timely disposal of storm water. Sources at CDGL told APP that the disposal pumps had started working within first hour of the rains however some problems disturbed the performance due to the power loadshedding in some areas especially at Muslim Town where the storm water blocked the traffic for one hour. The sources added that the WASA teams cleared most of the troubling areas following the SOP within three hours.
