FRANKFURT: The Frankfurt DAX index of leading shares plummeted 3.10 percent to 6,042.97 points in afternoon trades on Monday amid fallout from a US ratings downgrade and the eurozone debt crisis.

European markets followed Asian peers deep into negative territory following a global battering last week as concern grew that with an unprecedented US credit ratings downgrade, economies could slip back into recession.
