DAMASCUS: Syria on Monday condemned 'flagrant Israeli aggression' on the occupied Golan Heights a day after state media said 23 people were killed by Israeli fire against 'Naksa Day' protesters.
"Syria strongly denounces the flagrant attack yesterday (Sunday) on unarmed civilians, Syrian and Palestinians, along the demarcation line in the occupied Golan," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
"The aggression resulted in a large number of dead and wounded... and unmasks the reality of the state terrorism practised by Israel," added the ministry.
It drew the attention of the international community and rights groups to "Israeli violations of legitimate Arab rights."
Israeli troops on Sunday opened fire on young Palestinian and Syrian protesters marking the anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War in an event known in Arabic as the "Naksa" or "setback."
State media in Syria reported 23 dead and 350 wounded, a toll contested by the Israeli military which said 10 people had been killed when landmines exploded on the Syrian side of the demarcation line.
