MEXICO CITY: Nissan Motor Co. plans to close for up to 15 days its two assembly plants in Mexico because of a shortage of parts from Japan after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the company said Friday.
The Japanese auto maker said its plant in Aguascalientes would suspend activities from April 11 to 26, while the plant in Cuernavaca would stop work from April 18 to 24.
The reductions will mean 12,500 fewer vehicles produced, the company said, adding that it hopes to make up for the reduction later in the year.
About eight percent of the parts used in Mexico come from Japan.
Toyota, General Motors and Chrysler also have announced production cutbacks in North America as because of the shortage of parts from Japan.
