BUCHAREST: Romania's economy expanded 5.0% on the year in the first quarter, sharply above market expectations of 3.9%, a flash estimate from the National Statistics Board showed on Wednesday.
On a quarterly basis, GDP rose 1.3% in seasonally adjusted terms in the first quarter. The statistics board also said it has revised quarterly growth data of the fourth quarter slightly higher to 1.0% from 0.9%.
Analysts have said they expected the economy to grow 3.0% overall this year. The Social Democrat government has built its 2019 budget on a growth assumption of 5.5%.
