‘Faceblock’ calls for boycotting Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp for a day

Keeping in accordance with the data breach of Cambridge Analytica, a campaign ‘Faceblock’ is urging Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users to stop using the social media apps for a day.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is all set to appear before US Congress on April 11 where he will be testifying about the company’s misconduct. An international group of campaigners are asking Facebook users to participate in an online protest by boycotting the social media service for 24 hours and supporting the ‘Faceblock’ campaign.

According to Tech Juice, the campaign has been planned to take place simultaneously with Zuckerberg’s appearance. The campaign also insists on logging off from Facebook owned applications WhatsApp and Instagram.

Elon Musk deletes Tesla, SpaceX pages after #deletefacebook challenge

Around 87 million Facebook users were breached, which led to a number of celebrities including Indian actor Farhan Akhtar, Hollywood actors Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey removing personal accounts or official pages like Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla from the platform.

The Guardian quotes spokesperson for the campaign Laura Ullman saying how Facebook should have regulated and that the users deserve privacy. “We wanted to organize some direct action where lots of people could say that they love Facebook but want to see it improved. By not using the platform for a day, it’s a virtual demonstration that is easy to do but will send a powerful message that we demand better.”

Users can participate in the campaign by joining the ‘Faceblock’ event on Facebook.
