Imran Khan says Sharifs won't get NRO from anywhere this time

Published December 28, 2017

Referring to Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has said that this time Sharifs will not get a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) from anywhere.

The NRO was issued by the former President General Pervez Musharraf on October 5, 2007. It granted amnesty to politicians, political workers and bureaucrats who were accused of corruption, money laundering, money laundering and terrorism. The NRO was declared unconstitutional by the apex court on December 16, 2009.

In his tweet, Khan said that Sharif family can fly wherever they want but unlike last time, they will not get an NRO this time. Shehbaz's visit has raised speculations about a possibility of Sharifs seeking another NRO type deal, similar to how they did before from the Saudis.

The Kingdom had sent a special plane on Wednesday for Shehbaz, who is currently visiting Saudi Arabia. According to local media reports, apart from performing Umrah, the Punjab chief minister will also hold a meeting with officials of the Kingdom.

Imran Khan labels Nawaz Sharif as ‘Sultana Daku’

During his speech in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on Wednesday, Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari has said that if any NRO is given to any leader, he will fight and make all attempts to stop it.

The Sharif family has been in hot water since the Panama Papers were published last year. Since then, Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified as the prime minister by the Supreme Court of Pakistan and has also been named in three corruption cases. His daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar, sons Hussain and Hassan Nawaz have also been named in the corruption references.
