Improving law, order situation in Karachi: KCCI announces four-step strategy

KARACHI: The Karachi chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Saturday announced a four-pronged strategy to press the government to adopt practicable measures to improve the law order situation in the city.

Announcing the KCCI decision taken during a brainstorming session, former KCCI president and leader of the Businessmen Group (BMG) Siraj Kassim Teli said that the first step would be to hoist black banners all over the city from Monday.

During the second phase, all industrialists and traders would stage sit-ins in front of the Governor’s House and Chief Minister’s House on November 3 at 4pm.

As third step, KCCI would file a petition in the Supreme Court, urging it to implement its decision on law and order.

If nothing worked, the last step would be staging an indefinite strike from November 10.

During the session, he said, there were also suggestions for supporting the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (FPCCI) strike call, which is scheduled for November 8th..

Teli said that FPCCI might be approached to postpone its strike, adding that the Federation would be requested to observe the strike on November 10, instead on November 8.

Former KCCI President Muhammad Saeed Shaifq stressed the need for unity and urged the business community to start a joint struggle for improving the city’s law and order.

Chairman of the Site Association of Industry (SAI) Dr Arshed Vohra suggested that industrialists and traders should establish their own security force while remaining within the framework of law. “The force should have the power to shoot.”

Senator Haseeb Khan suggested that the business community should hold a joint meeting with the Governor, Chief Minister, IG Sindh, DG Rangers, the federal Interior Minister, representatives of all political parties. He suggested that industrialists should not leave the meeting until DG rangers started an operation against criminals in the city.

Former KCCI Presidents AQ Khalil, Zubair Motiwala, who is also the chairman of the Board of Investment, Sindh, and Haroon Agar also spoke on the occasion.
