Workshop on Afghan refugee's status in Pakistan held

A one-day training workshop titled: The status of Afghan Refugees in Pakistan in the Context of National A D International Legal Framework was held at the Department of Regional Studies, University of Peshawar. The workshop was organized by the Department of Regional Studies in collaboration with UHNCR. Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Prof Dr Johar Ali was the Chief Guest.

Dr Johar Ali in his inaugural speech said that there could be different views and perceptions about Afghan refugees stay and role in Pakistan. Academic work about Afghan refugees has going on from a quite long time. There is a need of a permanent solution of the issue Afghan Refugees. Yousef Daradekh, UNHCR Protection Office made a detailed presentation about international laws governing rights and obligation with regard to refugees.

He referred to different conventions and protocols. Muzafar khan UNHCR representative highlighted different laws and arrangements guarding refugees rights in Pakistan. Prof Dr Babar Shah Chairman of the Department in his welcome address said that although Pakistan is not a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention on Refugees nor to 1967 Protocol but still has been hosting millions of Afghan refugees on humanitarian, religious and ethno-cultural consideration.
