1. Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) was established in 1957. KS&EW is a state owned, IMS certified yard operating under Ministry of Defence Production. Major business areas include Naval/Commercial Shipbuilding, Ship Repairs and General Engineering.
2. Shipbuilding facilities include 03 x building berths, large fabrication area alongwith53 supporting workshops. KS&EW is capable of constructing Naval / Commercial ocean going and harbor utility ships upto 26,000 TDW. Till to date 448 vessels of different types and capacities have been constructed.
Currently, Fast Attack Craft (Missile) for Pakistan Navy, 1500 Tons MPV for Pakistan Maritime Security Agency and 07 Bridge Erection Boats for Pakistan Army are also under construction. A contract for construction of 02 x Milgem Class Corvettes for Pakistan Navy, with technical collaboration of M/s ASFAT A.S. (Turkey), has recently been signed.
3. Another mega project is construction of 8 x AIP Submarines. The contract has been signed between MoDP and China Shipbuilding &Offshore Trading Company (CSOC). Out of 8 submarines, 04 will be constructed at KS&EW, while remaining 04 are to be constructed at China.
4. KS&EW is providing Ship Repair facilities to entire maritime sector of Pakistan including Pakistan Navy and foreign flag ships. KS&EW owns 02 x Dry Docks and 02 x Quay Walls with complete E/M services.
5. Another important segment of industrial activity in Karachi Shipyard is Heavy Engineering Department. Major projects completed so far include the construction of overhead & luffing cranes, industrial boilers, LPG storage tanks, pressure vessels, oil storage tanks, cement plants and re-shelling of sugar mill rollers.
Karachi Shipyard has so far manufactured ten complete sugar plants, out of which seven are located in the province of Sindh. In addition, KS&EW has also entered into the international market and recently delivered 27 sugar mill rollers to Philippines and Thailand.
6. Installation of a state of the art Ship Lift & Transfer System (SL&TS) project with lifting capacity around 8,000 tons, having 13 x parking stations is also in progress. This mega project is expected to be completed by end of 2019 and would significantly enhance KS&EWs business of ship repair in particular.
7. KS&EW has played a historical role in transferring of technologies and broadening the industrial base of country. Extensive up gradation and modernization of Karachi Shipyard has converted KSEW into a state of the art shipyard which is ready to undertake all shipbuilding / ship repair requirements of maritime sector. Timely deliveries of projects to valued customers during the recent past have increased the credibility of KSEW in the market.
8. KS&EW is one of the few yards in the world which can undertake submarines construction. Its highly trained / motivated workforce is eager to undertake more projects with full zeal and energy. While striving to develop maritime and industrial sector of Pakistan, KS&EW hopes to achieve the national goal of self-reliance and indigenization in maritime sector.
9. Today KS&EW stands on strong footings and a profit bearing entity of Ministry of Defence Production.
