Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has not yet contacted leader of the opposition in Sindh Assembly Khuwaja Izharul Hassan to form consensus over caretaker setup in the province as the tenure of the incumbent government is expected to expire in next couple of days, sources in the MQM-P told Business Recorder.
However, Khwaja Izharul Hassan has approached PPP Sindh president Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on Friday to convey to the Chief Minister to decide a date for sitting for caretaker setup in Sindh province.
Aminul Haq, a senior leader of MQM-P told this scribe that meeting of CM Sindh and Opposition Leader Khuwaja Izhar was scheduled May 23 but it was hampered due to provocative statement from the chief minister at the assembly floor where he cursed those demanding a new province bifurcating Sindh.
"Earlier, it was decided that a meeting would be held after the conclusion of budget debate," he said. Amin confirmed Izhar-Khuhro contact for meeting with CM to finalise names of caretaker setup c before the culmination of the provincial assembly's term.
MQM-P that leads Opposition in the provincial legislature received the names of Ghous Ali Shah - as PML-F nominee and Aftab Shaikh as MQM-P's nominee. Amin said the Opposition was also discussing some other names in order to create consensus among the opposition parties on the caretaker Chief Minister.
As per Constitutional requirement, the chief minister and the opposition leader in the provincial assembly have to sit together to decide the names of the caretaker setup including the chief minister and the cabinet in the province and if no consensus is reached between them then the matter would be sent to the parliamentary committee comprising of four lawmakers each from treasury and opposition sides.
If the matter would not be decided even at that forum then the election commission would take decision on the names. It is also learnt that ruling Pakistan People's Party (Sindh) has not finalised candidates for the top provincial caretaker setup. They are considering the names of Hameed Soomro and Younus Soomro but differences among top party leaders on the names were not resolved so far.
The sources in PPP said Dr Younus Soomro seemed favourite candidate for caretaker CM of the treasury side. Dr Soomro is a known orthopaedic surgeon and has worked in the Civil Hospital Karachi. During the last caretaker set-up, he was the federal health minister. He originally hailed from Shikarpur.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has also presented it two names for chief ministerial slot in the interim provincial setup. The PTI parliamentary leader in Sindh Assembly Khurram Sher Zaman said they had proposed names of Justice Ameer Hani Muslim (retd) and former KMC administrator Fazlur Rehman, in this regard.
