Mauritius sugar production is expected to fall slightly this year to 350,000 tonnes from 355,213 tonnes in 2017, the Indian Ocean island's Chamber of Agriculture said on Wednesday. Although sugar has lost its status as the bedrock of the country's economy, contributing just 1 percent of the annual output of $13 billion, it still punches above its weight because it accounts for 14 percent of export earnings. Among the companies that process sugar are Omnicane, Alteo Ltd and Terra Ltd.
