Sindh Water Commission told: SITE body's work plan ready to install waste water treatment plant
SITE Association of Industry on Wednesday informed Sindh Water Commission that it has finalized a work plan to install waste water treatment plant at the industrial units at SITE industrial area. The work plan has been finalized with the assistance of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR).
One-man judicial commission headed by former Justice Amir Hani Muslim took up the issue of installation of treatment plant at industrial units in SITE. Sattar Peerzada, Counsel for SITE Association of Industry appeared before the commission and court and submitted the reply on behalf of factories' owners in the industrial areas that work plan is ready for implementation. He informed that waste water of factories falls in 14 nullahs, which are passing through the industrial area.
The Commission observed that matter pertaining to treatment of waste water would not be resolved till the installation of treatment plant at every factory in the industrial area. "We have clear directions that every factory is bound to install plant to treat waste water", Justice Hani declared.
About combined affluent plants project, the commission observed that this project is of federal and provincial governments and individual factory is nothing to do with it. "There is categorization of industries vis-à-vis requirement of treatment plant.
The Commission head stated that factory owners are not so "innocent" to pretend that they didn't know that their industrial units are discharging poison. "Factory owners should inform us about the timeframe for installation of treatment plants', Justice Amir Hani ordered.
Meanwhile, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) informed Water Commission that it had not imposed any ban on development works, being carried out under the supervision of Water Commission when ECP submitted an explanation letter with it.
Various development projects are going on in various parts of Sindh under the supervision of Water Commission. ECP submitted before the commission it had not even placed bar on utilization of funds on the development schemes, initiated before 1st April 2018.
Commission also ordered to remove the encroachments from nullahs and directed that cleaning of major four nullahs should be completed immediately.
Additional IG Karachi Mushtaq Mehr and SSP City also appeared in the deliberations of the commission to respond about the provision of security to staff of Sindh Solid Waste Management (SSWB). The Commission took strong exception to the insecurity among the staff of SSWB and observed this situation even scared Chinese, who signed contracts with SSWB to lift the garbage from various parts of the city.
If government has no writ, it is better to close down SSWB, former Justice Amir Hani Muslim remarked and said the we would ask Rangers to provide security if police expressed its inability in writing about it.
MD SSWB Taha Farooqi informed that he was also subjected to maltreatment when union workers intruded into the meeting of the department over cleanliness campaign at city graveyard for Shab-e-Barat.
The Commission directed Additional IG Karachi Mushtaq Mehr to investigate who is creating hurdles in the way of working of SSWB staff and arrest those miscreants, whose are included in the FIR over the incident at SSWB.
Commission also took up the issue of cables at footpaths and observed that K-Electric seemed to be above law after its privatization. Chief Distribution Officer K-Electric informed the commission that cables have been removed from footpaths at Shahrah-e-Faisal and few other areas and said that it would take three to four years to complete this task in entire city.
