Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif Saturday said that fair distribution of resources and diminishing the gap between the rich and poor are necessary to bring the country forward. While addressing the launching ceremony of book titled "Governing the Ungovernable" by former Governor of State Bank Dr Ishrat Hussain, here on Saturday, Shahbaz said "Factual freedom is meaningless in the absence of economic freedom as no one can command economically strong nations.
We have to move forward by relying on our own resources and this goal can be achieved by practical hard work and collective efforts." He added, "Such an economic and social justice system where there is equal opportunity to progress, fair distribution of resources, and no one should be worried for basic facilities is essential for our progress."
He said, "In order to bring peace and prosperity to the country and to replace despair with happiness, there is a dire need to diminish the gap between the rich and poor. Also we have to make the 21 million people prosperous."
Shahbaz said "Dr Ishrat has written a wonderful book on the situation, issues and challenges our country is confronting as the title of this book is indicating the challenges we are facing." Furthermore, he said "in 1990s Pakistan was ahead of many neighbouring countries in terms of economic growth and South Korea has made progress by adopting our 5-year development plan also India, Bangladesh and China are far ahead of us today."
"We have to figure out the reason that despite having the same conditions how these countries have gone forward of Pakistan," he said, adding: "Corruption cases have come out in India, Bangladesh and other countries like Pakistan but unfortunately only Pakistan is lagging behind on the road of progress.
Shahbaz said that standard human resource is necessary to achieve development goals and objectives can be achieved only through human resource development, effective planning and its implementation. "Effective system of check and balance is needed in the politicians, bureaucracy and all institutions for rapid development and system can be strengthened economically by opting across the board accountability," he shared.
Shahbaz said Punjab government has also focused on quality human resources and promoted financial discipline as well as transparency in the province. "We can attain our destination if we will move forward with firm beliefs, strong determination and hard work," he added.
Addressing the function, Dr Ishrat Hussain said Shahbaz Sharif has improved the system through good governance and the measures he had taken for the development of the province are appreciable. In-fact it can be said that it was the good performance of Shahbaz Sharif that brought victory to PML-N in the 2013 elections, he said.
Ishrat said Shahbaz Sharif's plans are ideal for education, health, transport, solid waste management, infrastructure, energy and other sectors and transparency in the projects worth of billions of dollars are further adding feathers in his cap. Dr Ishrat Hussain said Shahbaz Sharif's efforts against the corruption are commendable and he is a committed leader as well as reformer who have ensured recruitment of millions of teachers on merit in Punjab while efficiency of institutions has been increased through the information technology.
He said that performance of Shahbaz Sharif is a role model for other provinces as his revolutionary steps has brought long term effects.
