Former Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Khalid Shamim Wynne (retd) died on Saturday in a road accident on Islamabad-Lahore Motorway. The accident occurred near Chakri Interchange en route to Lahore, where General Wynne's car turned turtle after one of its tyres burst. Motorway Police said the driver had been speeding and it seemed he had lost control over the vehicle.
General Wynne's son and a close friend who were accompanying him, as well as the driver of the vehicle, were initially reported to be in a critical condition. They were shifted to Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, but the general's friend was later reported to have died as well.
General Wynne was the 14th Chairman of the JCS Committee. He had retired as a four-star general. Over his distinguished career, he held various command, staff and instructional appointments.
