The Lahore High Court on Friday reprimanded the Punjab cane commissioner for issuing show causes notices to sugar mills for not starting crushing season instead of lodging cases against their owners despite court directions. The petitioner Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab Maqsood Ahmad and others has challenged closure of sugar mills' production during the peak of crushing season.
On last hearing, the court had directed the cane commissioner to take action and also lodge cases against sugar mills who did not start crushing by December 22. However, Cane Commissioner Sanaullah told the court on Friday that show cause notices have been issued to mill owners who did not start sugar crushing.
The court said it had ordered for registration of cases but the commissioner showed leniency towards the sugar mills. The court directed the commissioner to submit a report on December 26 after lodging cases against the offending sugar mills.
