The 6th International Hindko Conference, arranged jointly by the Gandhara Hindko Board (GHB) and Gandhara Hindko Academy (GHA), was kicked off. The moot is themed "Attaining national unity through promotion of Indo-Aryan and other Pakistani languages". Delegates from the United States, England, Canada, Turkey, Malaysia and United Arab Emirates are in attendance.
Governor Engineer Iqbal Zafar Jhagra was chief guest at the inaugural session. During his address, he called for owning all the languages spoken in the country to promote the national unity. He said every language and the culture associated with had own importance. "We should make earnest efforts to hand over all this to our next generations," he added.
Iqbal Jhagra said that working for promotion of own language and culture with malice to none would help promote unity and brotherhood and that would strengthen national cohesion and lead to stability. The governor formally launched 100 books and publications brought out by the Gandhara Hindko Academy in and about various native languages.
Earlier, GHB Chairman Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi presented the address of welcome. He talked about the importance of Hindko, saying it was second main language of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and sixth of the country.
Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi who is a retired chief secretary of KP, said the board and the academy were promoting not only Hindko but also other languages spoken in the province along with Urdu and English as we respect all languages and cultures.
A delegate from the United States, Professor Dr Sayed Amjad Hussain, in his paper, stressed tangible steps for promotion of the Hindko language and culture.
The doctor, who specializes in cardiothoracic surgery and hails from Walled City of Peshawar, said the speakers of the Hindko language were living in various parts of the world in varied numbers. "It is the age of internet.
The digital communication means must be utilized to get in contact with speakers of the Hindko language in different parts of the world to carry out linguistic and cultural research and have the works published," explained the doctor who is based in Ohio and who has to his credit a number of books.
