LHC stays appointment process of FAU's VC

The Lahore High Court on Wednesday stayed process for the appointment of vice chancellor Faisalabad Agriculture University and sought replies from Punjab Higher Education Commission (HEC) and others by December 10. Prof Zafar Iqbal Randhawa had questioned the illegalities being committed in the impugned appointment process.
The petitioner counsel Ahsan Bhoon argued that directions of the high court had not been implemented in the process initiated for the appointment of the vice chancellor. He said the committee formed for the appointment, as per the court's directions was supposed to invite applications from overseas candidates also. Moreover, he said the search committee started the appointment process on the basis of last year's advertisement and different criteria from other universities. He said the criteria set by the high court, was meant for all universities.
Advocate Bhoon alleged that the criteria adopted by the committee was person specific and to accommodate a former vice chancellor of the university. A law officer told the court that interviews of 59 candidates had been conducted and summary had also been sent to the chief minister. He said stay the process at this stage would not be appropriate. The court however inclining with the petitioner's counsel stayed the appointment process.
