Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute and Ameerud Din Medical College Professor Ghiyasun Nabi Tayyab has said that eyesight is a great blessing of God but one can be deprived of this blessing if Glaucoma could not be avoided as it is considered the number one threat to the eyesight.
In order to stop this disease to spread, not only the government but the civil society, media and medical experts must also play their role to sensitize masses regarding timely diagnose and treatment to this menace.
Professor Tayyab expressed these views while addressing a seminar held at Lahore General Hospital in connection with the World Glaucoma Day.
The event was attended by a large number of doctors, nurses, paramedics and attendants of the patients.
Dr Ghiyasun Nabi Tayyab said that a serial of seminars, workshops and walks have been under way at LGH under the PGMI Health Education Program so that masses could remain well aware of symptoms, diagnosed and treatment process of various diseases.
He stressed upon the doctors to sensitize their patients and general masses about the importance of the slogan, "Prevention is better than cure."
Addressing the participants Professor Muhammad Mueen and Professor Abdul Hayee threw light on the symptoms and complications of glaucoma and said that 76 million people of age group from 40 to 80 would have been fallen prey to glaucoma till 2020 while a number of 1 million people in Pakistan are suffering from this disease which is mostly due to lack of information about this disease and not approaching doctors timely.
They said that all people over the age of 40 must have eye tests annually, especially; diabetic patients should be in permanent contact with doctor to avoid this threat.
The experts were of the view that pressure on the inner part of the eyes is an indication of this disease.
They said that it is very important to know that the moment its treatment is started, the patients can be able to secure the remaining eyesight in most of the cases; therefore this process should begin as early as possible.
They also told that all required equipments and facilities are available at LGH for the free of cost treatment of glaucoma.
