The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed motorcycle rickshaws, popularly known as Qingqi rickshaws, which are manufactured by registered companies. The apex court imposed a ban on plying unregistered motorcycle rickshaws across the country. Disposing of identical pleas of the association for the Welfare of Owners and Staff of Qingqi Rickshaws, a two-member bench led by Justice Gulzar Ahmad said in its order, "Only those rickshaws would be allowed to ply on the roads in whole Pakistan which are manufactured by registered manufacturers with standardised standard".
During the course of proceedings, the bench observed that buses of 1950 are still operational in Karachi metropolis whereas noisy Qingqi rickshaws are also plying in every nook and corner of the country. Justice Gulzar Ahmad remarked that Metro Bus, Green Bus and Orange Line Transport services have been introduced all over the country but no measures have been taken to regulate the Qingqi rickshaw system.
