The sub-committee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Monday reviewed illegal construction of Gun & Country Club at Capital Development Authority (CDA) land. Audit officials informed the committee that land was given to the Sports Board for holding SAF Games in 2003. Following this, the Sports Board handed over land to the club. Earlier, 44 acres of land and later 22 acres of land were transferred to the management of the club, they said.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed chaired the meeting of the committee. In his ruling, the convenor said the club should not be closed but the CDA should charge rent or lease the land to the club. However, Arif Alvi challenged his decision and said that the CDA should get the land vacated from the mighty club.
In another case, a payment of Rs 163 million was made to a contractor on humanitarian grounds. A contract of Rs 510 million for development of sector D-12 was awarded to a contractor who failed to complete the work. The CDA awarded Rs 163 million when he stopped and refused to continue work on the development of the sector. The officials of CDA claimed that an amount of Rs 3.4 million had been recovered from the contractor.
