Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has closed Trimmu and Punjnad canals after extensive discussions with Punjab government aimed at supplying additional water to Sindh. The water regulator was criticised by Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah for not filling Tarbela reservoir on time. Murad Ali Shah''s accusations have been taken seriously by the federal government.
"Irsa after detailed discussions with Punjab finally managed to close TP (Trimmu, Punjnad) canals. By this action about 4,000-5,000 cusecs additional water will be available for Sindh in next two days. This arrangement will continue till March 31, 2017," said Irsa spokesman Rana Khalid. He further explained that Chashma-Jehlum link canal has been closed before commencement of Rabi season and will remain closed till further decision by Irsa. "No water is being supplied from any link canal to Punjab," the spokesman added. Irsa has already convened a technical meeting on March 27 and the advisory council meeting on March 31, 2017 to review water situation in the country.
