Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday arrested Director General (DG) National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for alleged embezzlement in renting a building for the authority. An official said that FIA arrested DG Nadra Tahir Akarm after his pre-arrest bail plea was rejected. Akram is an accused in the case (FIR No 09/16) for allowing the renting of the building for Nadra in a non-transparent manner causing a huge loss of Rs 31.24 million.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan last year took notice of alleged corruption in renting a building for the authority by Nadra officials. He ordered FIA to probe into alleged embezzlement and bring the people involved in it to justice. The Nadra had suspended DG Akram in October last on charges of gross violations of Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules in renting an office building.
