This is apropos aBusiness Recorder news item "Qatar spending $500m a week on World Cup projects" carried by the newspaper on February 9. According to it, High spending World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar are splurging almost $ 500 million every week on major infrastructure projects for football's biggest tournament. Qatar's finance minister has been quoted eye-watering level of spending could continue until 2021.
More than $ 200 billion (187 billion euros) will be spent in total by the gas-rich Emirate in preparation for 2022.
That Qatar will be hosting World cup is a development that adds a lot of value to this sheikhdom of the Middle East. The country already hosts the region's most influential TV channel, Al-Jazeera, that had played a highly important role in the removal of Moammar Qadhafi of Libya and Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen in particular. This country is also known for hosting a number of overseas campuses of some of world's top educational institutions.
Unfortunately, however, it has failed to play any meaningful role in the efforts towards quelling violence in war-torn Syria; in fact it has been accused of siding with one of the warring parties to the conflict. Doha, therefore, would be required to take a more pragmatic approach to the situation in the lager interests of its World Cup plans.
