"We have serious concerns over the delay in finalizing the investigation of a fabricated news story carried by Dawn on 6th October 2016, three months after the committee was setup," defence sources told Business Recorder. The sources in the Interior Ministry confirmed that the report has still not been finalised. The government on November 7, 2016 formed an inquiry committee to ascertain the source of the information to Dawn at a meeting of the National Security Committee.
The investigation, headed by former Justice Aamer Raza Khan, was tasked to complete it within 30 days. The terms of reference required an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the alleged leak, determine the interests and motives behind the leak and publication of the story, establish the identity of those responsible and apportion blame.
On January 31, the military spokesman said he hoped the government would make inquiry's findings public, and a military source said the army is still pursuing the issue. The source further said that intelligence agencies (part of the committee), because of the sensitivity of the issue, want to fix responsibility as soon as possible.
