Introduction: FPCL has safely completed the construction of Pakistan's largest storage shed of Lattice Grid Space Frame design, the designer and supplier of which is Xuzhou Zm-Besta Heavy Steel Structure, China. This shed is being used for storage of semi bituminous coal. The Shed's main specifications are:
1. Size: Length 240m x Width 90m x Height 35m
2. Coal Storage Capacity: 60,000 MT
3. Design: Lattice Grid Space Frame
4. Alu-Zinc Sheeting with daylight panels
Coal Storage Shed:
As it is Pakistan's premier semi bituminous coal storage shed, its design and construction was a major challenge. The idea for the Lattice Grid Space Frame design came from a Chinese company plant site that FPCL's Head of Construction was visiting.
Chinese technical experts for the Coal Handling System from Northern Heavy Industries (NHI) recommended hiring of the team from China, experienced in the construction of similarly designed sheds. The FPCL team was determined to follow through the project through indigenous expertise and therefore took it as a challenge and started planning for execution of this job. To achieve the safe construction milestone, we proceeded as follows:
1. Brain storming sessions to finalise the erection philosophy and job sequence.
2. Selection of team members from FPCL and Descon.
3. Selection of suitable local contractor, M/s Khan Brothers for mechanical erection works.
4. Prepared the detailed activity chart / bar-chart for entire erection scope.
5. Engaged SGS, as a third party for quality control.
6. Prepared a detailed safety plan and deployed dedicated safely team for safe execution of job.
Job Safety:
Job Safety Analysis (JSA) was carried out for this challenging erection job. Safety nets, harness belts, standby ambulance and crane with cradle and spring mattresses were used. HSE training sessions were conducted before start of job, to achieve the safe working.
Mechanical Erection of Shed:
Synopsis of shed mechanical erection included the following steps:
1. Pre-Assembly of triangular units
2. Installation/erection of root section (lattice unit)
3. Installation of triangular units after root section erection
4. Installation of brackets and purlins
5. Installation of green colour Aluminum Zinc sheets
Team Appreciation On Safe Completion:
By the Grace of Almighty Allah, safe construction of shed was completed in second week of August 2016 and took nine months for mechanical erection. Upon safe and remarkable accomplishment of this challenging project, all construction team members were awarded the certificates of Appreciation on "SAFE WORKING" by Construction Head-FPCL.
