An exhibition of Japanese Calendars 2017 has kicked off at Institute of Art and Design, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, which was jointly inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor, University of Sindh Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat and Consul General of Japan in Karachi Toshikazu Isomura.
The event was attended by pro vice-chancellors of various SU campuses, deans of faculties, academic and administrative heads, faculty and a large number of students and art-lovers. The exhibition showcased more than 80 calendars mirroring a wide criss-cross of academic, socio-cultural, historical and archaeological landscape of Japan. In his presidential remarks, the vice chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat informed the CG that University of Sindh was the most economical public sector higher educational institution in Pakistan, where 32 thousand students with humble background from across Sindh were pursuing higher studies.
He said education was an antidote to the social menaces like terrorism, illiteracy, violence, crime and poverty adding that 70 percent of entire population of Pakistan comprised youth, who by seeking effective higher education could greatly contribute to the national development of the country.
Dr Burfat showed alarm on the fact that Pakistan still faced the challenge of 50 percent dropout of students during their school years which he termed as a big tragedy. Addressing the CG in specificity, he said that they wanted to learn from the experiences of Japanese counterparts and stressed on him to facilitate Pakistani youth in exchange scholarship programs. He termed University of Sindh as the most tolerant, inclusive, secular, democratic and pluralistic public sector university of Pakistan, where people from all faiths, ethnicities, beliefs and nationalities coexisted in complete peace and harmony.
Dr Burfat also shared that he was highly impressed by Japan's determination to survive in the face of disasters which she had experienced in the wake of the Second World War. He said that "Yes, I Can Do It" was a philosophy that Japan's progress inspired in his heart.
"We will soon appoint a teacher to teach Japanese at the varsity", he added. Dr Burfat also hinted at the alarming rise in mortality rate of women & children during birth and called for appropriate research interventions to improve this situation.
CG Toshikazu Isomura, in his address as a chief guest said that Japanese calendar exhibition had remained a regular feature at Karachi and Quetta and it was being organised at University of Sindh, Jamshoro for the first time. "I am very happy to see the eager involvement of the students of University of Sindh in the culture of Japan through this exhibition and I am giving you the good news that we will bring to the varsity the same exhibition next year also", he pledged.
Dr Hamadullah Kakepoto, Dr Wazir Ali Baloch, Professor Naimatullah Khilji and others also spoke on this occasion. Among others, Consul for Political & Commercial, Japanese Consulate in Karachi Murata, Dr Arfana Mallah, Dr Anila Soomro, Dr Ghulam Sarwar Mallah, Dr Moula Bux Thebo were also present. Earlier, the Consul General of Japan visited Marvi Girls Hostel and the museum of Institute of Sindhology of the Varsity along with Vice-Chancellor Dr Burfat.
