Residents of Orangi Town Sector-11 on Sunday held protest demonstration in the jurisdictions of Iqbal Market Police Station against the rising street crime incidents, accusing the area police for inaction.
They said scores of people are being deprived of their mobile phones, cash and other valuables every day, but on the other hand police was making too little efforts to check crime and arrest criminals, leaving the citizens at the mercy of dacoits and robbers, they alleged.
A protester alleged that police officials are either directly involved or abettors in the street crime activities. "They move around in plain clothes with guns and commit robberies when it pleases them." he said.
The agitated protesters burnt tires and damaged the windscreen of a police van. The hours-long protest caused severe traffic congestion on the area roads, making hard for motorists to make their ways. Police used tear gas and shelling to disperse the protesters.
Later the AIG Sindh Mushtaq Meher took notice of the incident and suspended the station house officer (SHO) Iqbal Market for his negligence.
