The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court issued notices on Friday to the federal government and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for February 9 in a petition challenging ban on broadcasting of Indian content on television.
The petitioner, M/s Leo Communication challenged a circular issued by the PEMRA on October 19, 2016, for being violative to the authority's rules and the constitution.
Advocate Taffazul Haider Rizvi representing the petitioner-company argued that in year 2010 the company was granted a 15-year license by the PEMRA to operate a cable channel "Filmazia".
He said under the license conditions, the channel was allowed to broadcast 10 percent of foreign content including India. He said the channel became very popular and received highest viewer ship ratings. However, he said, the PEMRA abruptly banned all Indian content in Pakistan without any prior notice to the petitioner.
