The most-traded copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange was up 0.93 percent at 46,850 yuan ($6,840) a tonne on Monday as US President Donald Trump reiterated plans to spend big on infrastructure. ShFE aluminium climbed as much as 3 percent to 13,775 yuan.

"We are going to need some evidence that this wasn't just rhetoric to get elected if this is to be long-term factor in the market," said a commodities trader in Sydney.
