Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar expressing concern over land grabbing on city major drains said 80 percent of the area of these drains had been encroached upon and no attention was paid on cleaning and removal of encroachments from drains during last eight years which resulted in construction of buildings on such lands. He expressed these views during a visit of the Nehr-e-Khyam in Clifton on Wednesday, said a statement.
He was accompanied by the municipal commissioner Dr Badar Jameel, Director General Technical Services Shahab Anwer, Sr. Director MS Masood Alam, and others. The Mayor while taking stern notice of the existence of encroachments on Nehr-e-Khyam instructed to demolish all these structures immediately. He said the road passing parallel to Nehr-e-Khyam should be widened after removal of nurseries and showroom vehicles from there. The Mayor said Nehr-e-Khyam used to be a 400 feet wide drain before it was occupied by land grabbers and now its width has shrunk to just 100 feet.
He said KWSB and KDA should be taken on board for removal of encroachments and drainage of sewage in the Nehr-e-Khyam. The Mayor also took strict notice of the land grabbing adjacent to Ocean Mall and directed that the boundary wall be removed and the Nehr-e-Khyam be cleaned completely.
