A twelve-year-old boy was tragically killed on Saturday after falling through an elevator shaft in a residential building in Saddar area of Karachi. The deceased was identified as Zain Ullah who was the only child of his parents. Locals offered funeral prayers of the child and later his body was sent to Quetta, from where it was shifted to Pishin for last rites. He was laid to rest amidst tears and sorrows.
Zainullah's father is a cart-puller while Zain also worked to assist him. His family members were grief-stricken after hearing about the tragic incident. Police officials have summoned building administration for likely negligence resulting in the tragic incident. A police source said three of the four elevators in the building are out of order, while the one in which Zain was present was operational.
The door opened when the elevator was not present resulting in the tragic, the police said. The building residents complained that no expenditure is made on elevator upkeep despite paying maintenance charges. A resident complained that the building which houses 144 residential apartments and more than four hundred shops is under control of the building mafia for the last thirty years.
He said that two elevators are completely out of order, while others are unreliable and not fit for use. "The only functional elevator of the building was in a dilapidated condition," he added. Another female resident also expressed similar complaints saying that the building watchmen misbehave when asked about the elevator upkeep, while the administration collects maintenance charges regularly but does not spend them.
