Like other parts of the globe, the 'World Disability Day 2016' was observed on Saturday in the provincial metropolis with a pledge to raise awareness among the people about their rights, importance of educating this segment of the society and efforts being made by the government and non-government organisations. The Department of Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Punjab, Ghazali Educational Trust and other people from different walks of life held rallies to mark the day and show solidarity with the disabled persons.
Director General Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Waheed Akhtar Ansari also lead a rally which started from the Social Welfare Training Institute, Lahore, and ended at McDonald's, Gulberg. Moreover, McDonald's also hosted a lunch for the disabled persons.
Speaking to the media persons, Waheed said "We are doing our best to enhance the skills and improve the life style of these children. Most of the people having such kids do not pay any attention to them and they feel neglected," he added. He claimed that his department has created more than 4,249 government jobs for special children and recently increased quota for the disabled from two to three percent.
