Firmness persisted on the cotton market on Friday as buyers remained in the forefront of buying spree to replenish their stock, dealers said. The official spot rate was unchanged at Rs 6300, dealers said. In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2600-3300, they said that in Punjab, phutti rates were at Rs 2800 and Rs 3550, as per 40 kg, they added.
In the ready session, over 20,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5950-6600, they said. Some analysts were of the view that prices remained stable due to persistent demand by the spinners. Most of the leading buyers were upset over the issue of cotton import from India because, they said and adding that import of cotton from other sources will be costlier. Besides, cotton analyst, Naseem Usman observed that the spinners on their part are perturbed over the issues of low supply of gas against higher rates.
Reuters adds: Cotton futures fell for the seventh time in nine sessions on Thursday, by about 1 percent, on speculator selling as US weekly export sales declined. The March cotton contract on ICE Futures US settled down 0.68 cent, or 0.95 percent, at 70.9 cents per lb. It traded within a range of 70.75 and 72.13 cents a lb.
