The Department of Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Punjab is all set to organise an awareness walk in the provincial metropolis to mark the 'World Disability Day 2016' falling on Saturday (tomorrow) to highlight the rights and efforts being made for the disabled persons in the country.
Director General Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Waheed Akhtar Ansari will lead the walk which will be organised in collaboration with different non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The walk will start from the Social Welfare Training Institute. "Around 70 disabled persons will take part in this walk who are living in different shelters homes of the department, especially in Nasheman, the home for disabled," sources said.
"In collaboration with McDonald's, we have also planned a lunch for these persons," the sources claimed. Nasheman was established in 1989 to provide professional care, training and rehabilitative services to polish the potential of such persons. They said Nasheman had a capacity to accommodate 100 residents including 50 day scholars and 50 boarders.
The World Disability Day was announced by the United Nations in 1992. The decision was taken in the light to promote such people as they are the reality of the society and cannot be neglected by the civil society. The aim of this day is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability besides creating awareness among the people about the rights, dignity and welfare of the disabled people.
