Six people were fatally shot by gunmen while travelling on a road in central Honduras, according to police, who have not yet established a motive for the killings. The Saturday night crime occurred in the city of Siguatepeque, about 56 miles (90 kilometers) north of the country's capital, as a group of unidentified individuals stopped the car of travellers and attacked them with a hail of bullets, police said in a report.
Next to the vehicle's driver police found a letter of release from the Tamara prison situated just north of Tegucigalpa, where he had been detained for "extortion, conspiracy and kidnapping."
Forensic authorities were able to identify the bodies of two women and four men. The Violence Observatory of the National Autonomous University of Honduras has registered about 80 multiple homicides - which include at least three victims - so far this year, killing some 300 people.
