French World Cup wining captain Hugo Lloris could be stripped of the Tottenham captaincy after he was arrested at 2.20am in central London on Friday and charged with drink-driving.

The French international allegedly failed a breathalyser test after being pulled over by police in Gloucester Place, near Baker Street.

The Spurs star had spent the evening with compatriots Laurent Koscielny of Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud at Bagatelle in Mayfair, a plush club-restaurant.

After being arrested he was taken to Charing Cross police station. It is believed he spent seven hours in custody before being formally charged and released on bail, and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court next month.

Tottenham are understandably furious as they prepare for their Premier League clash with Manchester United on Monday as Lloris, having only arrived home at 11am on Friday, missed training.

He is still in line to be in the squad for Old Trafford but must now convince manager Mauricio Pochettino that he should keep the captain's armband.
