The Supreme Court (SC) disqualified on Thursday former Federal Minister for Privatization Daniyal Aziz for five years over his anti-judiciary remarks.

A three-member bench resumed the contempt case hearing and announced the verdict. Justice Mushir Alam read out the verdict inside the court where Aziz was also present, local media reported.

The bench disqualified Aziz for five years, which means that the former minister cannot contest the general election on July 25. In its verdict, the top observed that Aziz had attempted to malign the court during his media talks by spreading hatred in light of Section 2 (b) of Article 204 of the Constitution.

The apex court had earlier reserved its verdict on May 3 after hearing arguments from both sides. On March 13, the SC indicted Aziz under Article 204 of the country’s constitution. The constitution states that the person will be punished if he has committed contempt of court.

The SC had taken a suo motu notice on February 2 against Aziz’s contemptuous remarks and summoned him to the top court.
